English overview of the Chancellor of Justice activities in 2018/2019 now available

The Chancellor of Justice is an independent constitutional institution appointed to office by the Riigikogu (parliament) on the proposal of the President of the Republic for a term of seven years. The Chancellor’s task is to make sure that legislation valid in Estonia is in conformity with the Constitution and that the fundamental rights and liberties of people in Estonia are protected. The Chancellor also fulfils the role of national preventive mechanism for ill-treatment, ombudsman for children, NHRI and monitoring authority for the CRPD. The latter two tasks were added this year.

Once a year, the Chancellor presents an annual report of his or her activities to the Riigikogu. The Annual Report 2018/2019 covers the period from 1 September 2018 to 31 August 2019. It gives an overview of the activities of the Chancellor of Justice in the areas such as the rule of law, the rights of the child, the rights of persons with disabilities, prevention of ill-treatment, protection and promotion of human rights, protection of privacy, and many others.
