On May 7–8, advisors from the Children and Youth Rights Department of the Office of the Chancellor of Justice participated in the annual meeting of the Baltic and Polish Children's Ombudsmen in Vilnius. It became clear that the issue of mobile device use in school environments is relevant in all countries.
Together, they agreed that digital competence is a skill that is indispensable in today's world, and therefore, schools should create opportunities for children to develop their digital skills. At the same time, clear rules are needed to prevent health problems that may arise from excessive use of mobile devices.
In Estonia, the rules for mobile device use are decided by the schools themselves. Meanwhile, Latvia recently passed a legislative amendment that prohibits the use of mobile phones throughout the entire school day for students in grades 1–6. Lithuania and Poland are still considering the necessity of establishing nationwide regulations.
