Head of NHRI activities Margit Sarv participates in the ENNHRI Forum in Brussels

25.09.2025

This week, Margit Sarv, Head of the NHRI Unit at the Office of the Chancellor of Justice, is taking part in the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI) Forum in Brussels, where she is moderating a discussion focused on the role of artificial intelligence in the work of human rights institutions.

The task of human rights institutions is to ensure that, when using AI, human rights are respected — for example, people’s privacy is safeguarded, data is protected, and decisions are made with individual human needs in mind. At the same time, AI can serve as a tool to assist human rights institutions in identifying and addressing potential human rights violations. It is essential, however, to keep in mind the possible risks so that the institutions’ work remains trustworthy even when AI is used.

In addition to AI, the Forum will also discuss several other issues, such as how to effectively combine multiple monitoring responsibilities (for instance, protecting the rights of persons with disabilities or children, preventing ill-treatment, etc.), how to remain resilient in times of crisis, and how to strengthen cooperation in the promotion of human rights.
