16.06.2022

The Office of the Chancellor of Justice, in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice, organized a training course "Children of Parents in Prison: Their Rights and Needs" for prison officers, probation officers, specialists working in the field of child protection, and policymakers.

The training discussed why children whose parents are in prison need special attention; how to receive and support children in prison; what information children need and in what form it should be given; what communication opportunities can be used for communication between a child and a parent and how to support a child outside of prison. The question of how the child's well-being and the communication between a child and a parent in prison affect the parent's resocialization goals was also under consideration. The training was conducted by Liz Ayre, head of the pan-European network Children of Prisoners Europe with long-standing international work experience, and Ewelina Startek, project manager of the Probacja Foundation. Estonian experts also took the floor.

The training was funded by the European Economic Area and Norway Grants 2014-2021 Programme "Local Development and Poverty Reduction" project "Creating a System of Special Treatment for Minors".
